The Doberman history started in Germany in the city called Apolda. This city is situated at the Thuringia, a state in the country. In the said region, a famous tax collector named Herr Louis Doberman is also a well-known person for putting stray dogs in the local pound. Because of his job and the money that he usually carries Herr Louis Doberman would like to have a dog that would protect him while on the road. He wants to have a canine that is not too big or small and be very intimidating to those who want to rob him. At the same time, Herr Louis Doberman was also looking for a dog that does not require too much maintenance as well. Other than that, it must have the stamina, is alert, intelligent, and most of all, aggressive.
Because Herr Louis Doberman already had these specifics, he already narrowed down his choices when it came to the dog breeds that he would use to develop the Doberman that we know today. Probably, this is the major reason why Doberman history calls this breed as the Man Made Dog.
Unfortunately, Herr Louis Doberman did not made a record of the different breeds that he paired up in order to develop the Doberman. However, experts gave their hypotheses according to the temperament and the anatomy of the Doberman today. Moreover, they also based their presumptions on the dogs that exist on that region during that time.
It is said in the Doberman history documents that one of the foundation breed of this canine is the German Pinscher. Although there are no physical features that resemble to the Doberman, the temperament of the two breeds are alike. They are also both aggressive as well as alert.
Another breed mentioned in most Doberman history documents is the Rottweiler. Aside from being intelligent like the Doberman, it is also a canine that a great ability when it comes to tracking and has excellent stamina as well.
Next on the list that is included in the Doberman history is the Manchester Terrier. It is said that the tan and black color of the Doberman came from the Manchester Terrier. Moreover, the refinement as well as the elegant looks of the Doberman was influence by this breed too.
Lastly, the Beauceron was also thought to be in the Doberman history as well. Its solid built, intelligence and alertness are some of the characteristics that the Doberman have today.
During the 1800’s Herr Louis Doberman died and left the project to Otto Goeller. Perhaps, he is the person responsible for adding the dog called Greyhound in developing the Doberman. The Greyhound’s color, speed, stamina, and height are probably the factors that contributed to the appearance of the Doberman.
In Germany, the National Dobermann Pinscher Club was formed in 1899. A year after that, Otto Goeller and the members of the club set the standards for the Doberman. Immediately, the German Kennel Club recognized the Doberman man as a distinctive breed.
It was only around 1908 when the Doberman was introduced in United States. And by the year 1921, fanatics formed the Doberman Pinscher Club of America. In 1922, the breed’s standards that were written in German was translated and adopted in United States. The Doberman history became very crucial as well as important during the next fifteen years.
During the World War I, the Doberman became almost extinct because of the depression and starvation experienced by the people that time particularly in Europe. Having a Doberman or any kind of dog for that matter is a luxury that not everybody could have. While others were letting their Dobermans become stray dogs, there are some who cruelly kill their canines instead. Only those who are in authority or working in armed forces were able to own and feed the Doberman. Therefore, to prevent the Doberman from being extinct, it is a must that the Doberman multiply. But it is not just the quantity of the Doberman that is essential. It is also important that the quality of the dog remains as well.
At the Second World War, the Doberman was also at its brink of extinction. But thanks to the Dobermans that were purchased, owned, and fed by the Americans, it became possible for the Dobermans to breed again.
The breeder from America asked the judges from Germany to give advices about the Doberman, its traits, temperaments, and everything about the dog so that he could take care of the canine easily. However, this breed was rarely seen in Great Britain not until 1947.
Before getting a Doberman Pinscher, you must understand that the Doberman history is mainly made up of stories about aggressiveness. This is necessary because it was used as a dog for armed forces, protection dog, and an all-around working dog.
Today, the breeders of the Doberman who are responsible enough to breed the said canine are very much aware that is important to pay attention to the temperament of the Doberman before anything else. Although there are now some tamed Dobermans, there are still some who are aggressive. And a responsible breeder would not offer this type of dog if the person wants it as a family pet.
But with proper training, an aggressive Doberman can also be a loving and an adorable dog as well. However, if it falls in the wrong hands, this breed can be the most ruthless weapon that an owner could ever have.
